American psychologist Louis Cheskin conducted a series of experiments offering the same product in different packages to buyers. He found out that the appearance of a package may affect the taste of cookies, quality of soap and freshness of juice. This is how the emotional transfer effect was discovered. It turned out that up to 80% of consumers thought that the products with the “proper” package were of a better quality. While in 1930s this result was quite unexpected, today we daily see the conformation of this effect on shelves in stores and other points of sale.
If one pours well-known fizzy drinks of competing brands into unlabelled glasses, hardly anyone will be able to make a difference between them. It is only a package that creates a unique brand with its traditions and followers.
